5 ways to open the command line
This article is written using Windows 7 Maximum as an example. In other versions of Windows some methods will not work or may be different.
Opening a command prompt through the Run window
This is one of the universal ways to run the command line. It’s fast, convenient and works probably in all possible versions of Windows.
Open the Run window. To do this, press the Windows+R key combination.
- In the “Open” field, type “cmd” and press Enter or the OK button.
Running the command line via the Start menu
This method does not require you to type anything from the keyboard, but you must have the Start menu.
Open the Start Menu and go to “All Programs/Standard/Command Line”.
Tip: In Windows 10, the command line has been moved to the “Utilities – Windows” folder.
Running the command line using the search box on the Start menu
Another way when we need the Start menu.
1- Open the Start menu and type “command prompt” in the search box.
- Select the command line in the search results, or press Enter.
Opening the command line from Windows Explorer
This method is good because you can open the command prompt immediately for the folder you want.
- Press and hold down the Shift key and right-click the desired folder in Explorer.
- In the context menu that opens, select “Open Command Window”.
Opening the command prompt from a Windows system folder
One of the most unusual and at the same time easiest ways is to find and open the command line in the operating system folder.
Open Windows Explorer and go to the path below, or copy it and paste it into the address field: “C:\Windows\System32”
- Next, find the file “cmd.exe” in that folder and open it by double-clicking.
